Defever & Mrs. Bender - We have a lot of field trips coming up, will PTO cover the cost for chaperones/volunteers??  YES!!  Mrs. Defever will be teaching K next year and needs a rug.  We can use Scholastic Dollars, Amber will send the link.  Thank you for the extra Hokie stools and beans for the beanbags, the kids have really appreciated them!!  The field trip forms are still the same for teachers to submit to PTO. Mrs. Bender has CDs that can be read with books and is looking to get a system for the kids to have a CD player with headphones.  We can get this with Scholastic Dollars as well!!
  • Principal report - Academics reporting - We are in the last round of assessments, 3rd and 4th Grade are doing the MStep now.  The kids are getting a little more of a break in between testing this year, which is nice.  We won’t see results from that until the fall sometime. The teacher had some professional development over the last early release day.

    • Shop-A-Roo - Katie - Nothing new.  Mandy will check to see when we received the check last year.  It doesn’t seem like we have many users.  Maybe have a receipts basket for people to drop receipts.  Or a table at the Walk-A-Thon to help people sign up.

  • Call meeting to order - Introductions
  • Approval of March minutes - Deater
  • Treasure report - Mandy - Assembly and Book Fair was last month. And we also had some Professional Development as well.
  • Teacher report - Mrs. Fox - March is Reading month was a great success.  Field trips are starting.  Thank you for approving the third grade field trip coming up!  The kids did enjoy all the books that were from book fair, so thank you for that!
  • Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report. We had a great month, we got in a lot of reading, and the school looked great!  The assembly went well, the presenter was impressed with the energy of our school, and he complimented our student body.
  • Old Business:
    • Book Fair - We bought $2000 worth of books for the students and teachers.  We still have scholastic dollars left.  There are still a few teachers that haven’t used their Christmas gift money yet.  We do have a BOGO book fair coming up - that will be May 15 & 16 in the gym. Monday evening would probably be the best night if we are going to do a night time event - 5:30-7:00.  If we sell $2000, we will get $1000 in Scholastic dollars back.
    • March is Reading Month
    • Bean bags/Stools - We refilled some of the beanbags for the school, it was kind of a big mess!!! We still have some to fill, but perhaps in the future we will just purchase new bean bags to avoid the hassle.
    • FSU Engineering Class - Some of the teachers attended this event - they loved it!  It is to help with STEM learning. Ferris may become the national hub for this STEM learning - so that may be an advantage for us!
  • New Business:
    • Box tops - Maggie - No news - need to collect soon
    • Shop-A-Roo - Katie - no news
    • Labels - Becky - not much going
    • PE request - Mr. Miller - Is requesting some new equipment for P.E. Gopher is the go to brand for equipment, though it may be a little pricier, but they are high quality materials, so it may look expensive, but it should last!  There is an assortment of balls, discs, scooters, etc.  This equipment will STAY at Riverview.  We are working on storage, and some new shelves as well.   This is a great way for ALL of the kids to benefit from some of the Walk-A-Thon money raised!!  We will vote on a maximum of $3300 and then Ms. Kent and Mr. Miller can get together on some of the details. Approved! Can we do a big “opening” and show all the kids assembly style??
    • New Benches by Bus - There has been a request to have the benches redone on the buses side of the building.  It seems that they are very rarely used other than to jump off of.  Let’s have them removed if needed.
    • Pavilion Meeting - The Pavilion is a little more involved than we initially thought, this is something that we are going to continue to work towards, but it is going to be awhile before it comes to fruition.
    • Health & Fitness Day - May 26 - We have reserved the inflatables through Jak’s already.  We will need to reconfirm.
    • Family Picnic - May 19  - The menu is always hot dogs and the families can bring in any food the want.  We will just keep the food out of the classrooms this year.
    • 4th Grade Clap out - Are we having cookies??  Yes!! Mandy will order the cookies.  Emily will order the T-shirts. Any suggestions for Tshirts??  A shirt with all of the classes names in the shape of a cardinal maybe?  Or Class of 20--?
    • Para/Staff Day - Friday April 28  - Gift cards & balloons (Latex free) and decorations
    • Teacher Appreciation - May 1-5
    • Last day of School - June 8 tentatively

Thanks to PTO for getting that for us!! Our staff was amazing for the start of March is reading month.  We had a lot of special people in the building today to for celebrating.  Science night was a great success again.  If you would like to be a guest reader, let us know!  This is a big month for us.  Testing is all done for now.
  • Old Business:

    • Box tops - Maggie - Just submitted the last one, we should get around $330ish dollars.  It will be the last check we will get for the year.

    • Shoparoo - Katie
    • Assembly ideas - Reading committee has an assembly picked out for March 17 that will incorporate March is reading month. $650 approved.
    • Spring book fair - Amber - March 13-17.  There will be a sign up sheet going around for anyone who will be able to help out.  For family night, we do not have any food or extras going, so we will just need a few people to help inside the book fair.  Family night is from 5:30 - 7:00.  We have been contacted about doing the BOGO book fair again this year.  We sold about $1500 last year from this event, is anyone interested in doing this again.  It is a little difficult scheduling this event??  Maybe we could run in over a couple days and do it during the daytime so everyone can get a chance to see it all?  Let’s do it!  Amber and Ms. Kent will get together and find a couple of options for dates.
    • Health & Fitness Day -
    • Field trips - This is floating along. Pass it on to the teachers!!

      • 1st - Usually goes to the zoo
      • 2nd - Howard Christensen nature center
      • 3rd - Fifth Third Ballpark education day in May - school kids day - the game will last 1.5 - 2 hours.  Phys ed style events on the side.  $8 per child for lawn seats packing their own lunch.  We have 3 classrooms, so they would need 2 buses. Either May 17 or 24.
      • 4th - Grand rapids public museum and School section lake schoolhouse
    • K team reading training - There is a reading training for K teachers, Mrs. Scheible and Mrs. Quinlan has already been through it. It involves some new teaching techniques, it goes through GVSU. It would be $150 per teacher and we would send 3 teachers.  This would be a great opportunity for our K teachers!  We approve!
    • Auto Owners - Science fair event
    • Mrs. Defever 2.0 beanbags and tippy stools - The third grade did a persuasive writing project and they really like the tippy stools and their beanbags need some refill beans.  They were asking us if we could fund those upgrades.  We can use some Scholastic dollars for some of those items!  We will get 6 new stools and we can get beans for anyone who needs them in all the classrooms.  The stand up desks are still going well too!
    • On March 17 there is an all day training at the University that would include 2 tool kits for them to use in Engineering projects in the classroom.  It is related to the women in Engineering event that we ran last year.  If there are any teachers that are interested it would be $598 for two teachers.  Anyone interested can talk to Angie Mishler.  Angie will pass on the info to Ms. Kent.
    • Is there any interest for our school in doing a 3D printer?  We would have to check with our tech guy to see, but it is something we would consider in the future. We will take any opportunity to get some new technology in our kids hands!!
    • Mrs. Lamar - Looking into getting some new instruments for the school.  Would love to have instruments that wouldn’t have to be shared between us and Brookside and have a cart to transport the instruments.  We definitely want to help out with this!!
    • Teacher appreciation
    • 4th grade clap out is June 1st probably 1:45-2:45ish.

We need bus drivers!!! If you know anyone, pass it on!!

Principal report - Not present
Old Business:
  • Holiday Shop - how much money did we take in from the Holiday shop? It was really busy and seemed like everything went over well.  We had to go back and get more items everyday. We are not sure how much we brought in in total.  We are still waiting on all expenses and total money brought in before we have settled up. Will have a total by next meeting. Should we make any changes for next year?? How many kids did we sponsor this year??  Next year, let’s add to the envelope a spot to donate for kids who couldn’t bring in their own money.  We definitely ran out of bags.

October 2016 Meeting Minutes

10/6/2016

Call meeting to order
  • Introductions
  • The board
  • Approval of September minutes
Treasure report
  • Mandy - copies of the newest report are being passed around, there are Walk-A-Thon expenses and also beginning of the year teacher gifts
Teacher report
  • Mrs. Garner - Spelling city is something that the 1-4 teachers would like to have.  The cost is $25 for 25 students and a little additional expense for each added student.  Some teachers have already purchased this, but it is something that the kids can use at home as well.  There may be a group/whole school rate.  Maybe we can reimburse the teachers now and get the school rate next year.  No one opposes covering this for the teachers.  Deater will find out who has already purchased and report back to Emily.
  • The teachers now have to put their standards on their lesson plans, this is a new state requirement that requires a lot of extra time for the teachers.  Planbook.edu.com is a $25 annual subscription is something that can assist the teachers in making these plans.  It will take care of some of the legwork for the teachers.  This will have to be renewed every year.  No one opposes.
  • Nikki Jorgensen had mentioned to Ms. Cole that she would be interested in coming in to do art with the students.  Would the PTO be interested in paying for some of the expense of art supplies.  Ms. Kent will have to be consulted about this before we move forward.  Deater will talk to Ms. Kent.
  • 4th Graders - We pay for a newspaper subscription for the 4th graders so that they can read it and use it in their curriculum.  Do we want to do this again?  Yes. No opposition.
Principal report
  • Ms. Kent - Academics report (None this month)
Old Business:
  • First assembly and field trip were a success
  • Homecoming - Huge success!! Thanks to all the members who helped out!!
  • Vote to adopt the bylaws as written
New Business;
  • Box tops: Maggie - Have collected about 1500.  They need to be mailed in by Nov. 1.  There is an app for Boxtops as well.  You can scan receipts and it will tell you exactly which items qualified.  We did set new, lowered goals this year for each classrooom.  Feltman may need a new bucket.  How about a traveling trophy instead of having a monthly goal?  The goal for each student is 90 boxtops per year.

  • Labels: Becky - no changes
  • Shoparoo: Katie - All you have to do is scan receipts.  The app is free.  Plan to do a bulletin board with info on this and boxtops after Walk-A-Thon is over.  Remember that we bring in money with these things, but we are not using these are fundraisers.
  • Book Fair: Amber - Book fair is the last week of October.  We have a pirate theme.  We will have an activity of some sort for the kids to do.  There will be no ice cream.  We are open during the day as well as the Wednesday night event.  Amber will pass around a sign up sheet, if you can help during the week, talk to Amber about running the cash register.  This is NOT a fund raiser.  We get scholastic dollars for this which we give all back to the teachers and students in book and classroom needs.  Can we make everyone aware of the wishlists for teachers too?? Maybe a Facebook post or a message in the lounge to remind teachers to fill out their wish lists.
Walk-A-Thon!!! OCTOBER 8
  • We raised over $47,000 in 2015 and over $26,000 in 2014.  Last year at the day of the event we were at $16,000.
  • ONE ASK!!  We are almost to $21,000 currently.
  • Positivity is the name of the game!!  Bringing the Energy Bus!!
  • Angels of Action - we are working together.  They will have a booth at the event and anyone who brings a donation will be entered for a BWW raffle basket.
  • Closing Oct. 28th - It will be around 2 or 2:30 because it will be messy!!
  • Incentives committee is ordering on the 10th.
  • Fruit kabob station will now be just apples and bananas.
  • Sign up sheet is going around, please sign up to help!!
  • Dr. Garlic has the toothbrushes and toothpaste - We can have a sign for the business and a table to pass out the goodies.
  • We have booths for Spectrum, Chemical, Dr. Garlic, and Angels of Action
Parent teacher conferences
  • Meals for the teachers - Mr. Scheible - October 18th and 20th by appointment.
  • Holiday Shop:
  • Abby is heading this up already.  Please get in touch with her if you want to be on this committee.
  • Last year, we did everything is $1.  The committee needs to decide what we have in the shop.  We were short on supplies last year.  We also need to have a cap on the amount each student brings in.  We will do a $10 cap.  Abby has been checking into dollar store purchases already.  We also need to order the bags for wrapping. Emily still has some stuff from last year as well.  Contact Abby is you want to help.  Erin and ??? will help.  We usually have high schoolers that come help with this as well.  We do also have some volunteers we can tap into at Ferris as well.
Other Items:

  • For reimbursement - there is a form on the website to submit receipts.
  • We didn’t renew our movie license.  Are we interested in doing a parents night out where parents can drop off kids at the school so the parents have some free time?  There may be Ferris students that we could ask about volunteering.  If we know far enough in advance, the honor students at Ferris are usually able to volunteer.  Is this a liability issue?
  • Angie Maury - She has started a 4H club with a focus on crafts and science experiments.  Meetings will be the second Tuesday of every month from 4-6.  For ages 5-19.
  • Can we do a Tshirt sale similar to what the high school did with the 2 for deal.  We did Tshirt sales last year and we ended up just being the middle man.  We are going to make Tshirt sales available, but we are going to send people into the Tshirt shop.   They are going to make an order form for us that will be available for parents to order right at his store.

Approval of June Minutes - Jenn Deater
  • The google drive is open to everybody - this is where you can find the minutes for our monthly meetings.  Log onto: RiverviewPTO509@gmail.com Password: riverviewrocks509.  Everything is on there!!  Our website will also lead you there-www.riverviewrocks.org.
Treasure report
  • We had a breach in our bank account at the end of last year.  We will pass around the bank account printout, but we will have a clearer account next time.  We have just over $11,500.
Teacher report
  • Mrs. Maat - Ms. Stickler has some Smartboard requests.  She has a $175 of smartboard things.  Third grade will be able to use this in years following.  Approved. There are 3 or more teacher who also have Mobimax requests.  Mobimax is just a tool that the teachers can use in the classroom that the kids can use at home, and it meets them at their level. It would be $600-$800.  Mrs. Scheible has the request for the Anderson and Girls apple orchard field trips for K.  We have basically 2.5 K classes this year, so we will need two buses this year, so cost will be a little more expensive than last year.  Also, the bus expenses has gone up this year as well.  We want to try to fund field trips without having to ask parents to contribute additional money.
Principal report
  • Ms. Kent - The school is booming!!  We love our kids, we try to work hard for our kids.  They are going through a battery of assessments the first weeks of school to get baselines on them.  We have 30-40 more kids in the building than last year, so it is tight.  We are really shooting big for the walk-a-thon.
Old Business:
  • Health and fitness will not be rescheduled
  • Cartridges - Cooley was not here, will bring up during October meeting
New Business:
  • Food Allergy/Safe snack list- We have some parents who are available to let us know more about the food allergies in our school.  Q&A with food allergy experts.
    • There is a hotline available to those who have questions!
    • Italian Ice, Lemonade, and popcorn are items most kids can participate with.  Try to have events without food if possible.
    • Allergies are a legal issue as well as a physical issue.
    • Restriction of specific allergens for the classrooms is a top recommendation
    • How can we be inclusive for those with allergies?  Consider non food items for parties, open communication with teachers and school.
  • Box tops - Jenn Deater/Amber - We raise thousands of Scholastic dollars a year with this and book fair.  We don’t consider these as fund raisers as this money just goes right back into the school and teachers.  Maggie Ramsey has volunteered to take this over.  We do also have honor students that help us process the boxtops too. Boxtops must be turned in before the expiration date.
  • Labels - Becky - this is still phasing out, if you have these you can still turn them in.
  • Book Fair - Amber- The packets come home through the week.  We have a great event twice a year.  We have traditionally have an ice cream night, which we will have to revise this due to allergies.  Oct. 24-28 will be our first book fair.  Sign ups will be at the next meeting.  Our evening event will be Wed. Oct. 26.
  • Walk-A-Thon - Oct. 8
    • The planning has started.  To get involved just ask and we can put you on  a subcommittee to help out.
    • First letter home already went out.
    • Kick off assembly is Monday the 12th at 8:30
    • PTO members are the eyes and ears of this event!!  We need to know if anyone has questions, confusion, or issues with anything!!
    • This is a ONE ASK event!!  We only ask our parents and community to donate to us ONE time a year!
    • This is the third annual event for us.  It has REALLY worked for us.  We know this isn’t going to please everyone, but we do our best to make the most of our money.
    • We spent 80%+ of our money that we made last year.  We are trying to save toward a shade/pavilion for the playground.  We keep almost all of the money we raise!  This works because we get the teachers, parents, and kids excited about it.  We have bought lots of playground equipment, assemblies, field trips, etc. IT was brought up that we use the money to buy beginning of the year supplies for the teachers.  This was voted against as we are trying to bring fun to the school with playground, field trips, assemblies, etc and the money can be spent on those.  Other parents like bringing that stuff in.
    • Our theme this year is positivity/Energy bus.
    • We want to know the feedback - the good and the bad.  We need to know what everyone thinks so that we can fix what we can and just get better and better.
  • Homecoming - Oct. 1
    • Sign up to help with this committee!  Who wants to be in charge of this committee??  They will need to coordinate the float.  There will be a theme.  Megan Knopf will take charge. Rachel and Jody Lee will help.
    • Meet with Renee
    • More info coming
    • Spirit week will be September 26-October 1
  • Parent teacher conferences
    • We need someone to take the lead on this! We provide the melas for the teachers.
    • Nick Scheible will coordinate.
  • Bylaws
    • Mandy - We are still working on developing a budget and bylaws.  The google drive will have a copy of the bylaws.  We are doing our best to try to formulate this.  If you have any amendments or thoughts, let us know!  We will most likely vote this in next meeting.

June 2016 Meeting Minutes

6/2/2016

  • Call meeting to order
  • Approval of May minutes - Deater
  • Treasurer report - we have just over $17000 in our account right now, we are still having issues with our account due to our stolen card.
  • Principal report- Ms. Kent - Academics report - We are putting a lot of time into our state reporting.  We have been talking to a lot of parents, and will be speaking to more to look at some of our documents.  The family picnic went over really well, especially on the early release day.  Health and Fitness day was canceled because of the weather, but we do plan to reschedule this sometime in the fall.  We finished our Mstep at the end of May. The students and teachers are LOVING the field trips.  Fourth grade clap out is tomorrow as well.  Today was the day for negotiations for when school will start in the fall.
  • Teacher report - Mrs. Maat - Everything is going well, we have a lot of field trips going on right now.  Thank you to the PTO for all the field trips. The testing has wrapped up and we are in the downslide.
Old Business:

  • Teacher appreciation - went really well!!
  • Family picnic - it was perfect weather, went well for early release
  • Health and fitness rescheduled - maybe do a back up day? Tough to schedule this time of year with all the kids out with field trips.
  • BOGO book fair - we sold around $1100, about $2200 value of books that went home.  We didn’t have as much response to this book fair as before, but maybe because the kids didn’t see it at school, weather, etc.  It was a great thing, just a tough time of year.
  • Playground - AWESOME!  The kids seem to really like it, especially the spinner.  There is a long line every recess for that one.
  • Mr. Shewan assembly - this was SO great!!! Thank you so much to the Elliot family for the bench!
  • Cartridges - Cooley cricut donation
New Business:
  • Box tops - Jenn Deater/Amber - Mrs. Feltman’s can for box tops is missing and we cannot locate them!  Mrs. Maat’s class is the closest to making the goal and they are at 78%.  We will need to adjust our goals for next year so that we can have an attainable goal.
  • Labels - not much going on here
  • Fourth grade clap out - this is tomorrow!! It starts at 2.   Heather is going to pick up stuff - shirts, we have lemonade and Mandy is on the cookies.
  • Angel ride donation - we donated $50 to them in the fall to be on a sign.  We have another donation option from them, the lowest amount for donation now is $250.  Should we wait and donate in the fall or jump for the $250?  Let’s do $50 in the fall.
  • Field trips - Our total for field trips this year is just over $4600, which is much lower than last year by about $2000. Total major purchases make up about $17,282.  We have spent around 75% of what we have raised at the walk-a-thon this year.  We have still spoken about putting in a pavilion similar to what is at the high school tennis courts.  We also have talked about putting in a water fountain. We will have to make some inquiries into cost of these items.  Maybe we could set aside some money towards these purchases in the future.  We would like to encourage the third graders to take a field trip, we have heard from some parents that would like to see them participate. We have also talked about a storage shed for the future.
  • Walk-a-thon meeting - Brookside has had a change in leadership, we will have our initial meeting on June 22 at BWW at 7pm.  We may look at breaking off into committees this year.  We are possibly bringing in the middle school to participate and eventually even the high school.  Elementary will keep the corporate sponsors money.
  • Do we want to renew or movie license?  Our last movie showing we had a lot of rowdy kids.  How can we enforce behavior?  We need to address this for next year.  We have had a lot of request for a carnival, or an international night, or a globe trotter night, sledding party.  Maybe we will move to do this events next year instead of movie night and see what the response is.
  • Girls on the run - haven’t seen a bill yet
  • Officer elections - we are still working on bylaws.  We are looking to break out the treasurer role from the president role.  Emily would like to nominate Mandy for the treasurer position.  Unless everyone has any objections, we can keep rolling with the positions we have.  Everyone is in favor.
  • Budget in development

  • Call meeting to order
  • Approval of April minutes - Deater
  • Treasurer report - Our credit card has been stolen, so there have been some issues with that.  Otherwise, there hasn’t been much for the month of April.
Teacher report
  • Mrs. Defever and Mrs. Krebs - The teacher say PTO is totally awesome!!  Thank you for making everyone feel special!  Fourth grade has sent in forms for field trips. Fourth grade will be seeing the little red school house out at School Section Lake.  Third grade will be going to Cran Hill soon as well.  We will not be allowed to bring pizza.  It will be weather dependent. Mrs. Krebs would like class shirts for her class when they go to field trips etc.  25 Lime Green shirts all adult small size. Mrs. Bender has a field trip request form to submit for 1st grade.  May 31, Tuesday, they want one bus.  We will cover the cost for admission and buses.  1st grade also wants to go to the Roller Rink on June 1 at $3 a student.  They also want to walk the kids to Hemlock at some point, and are asking for $1 per student to get the kids ice cream at State Street Scoops. Mrs. Zocco has a request for a colorful carpet, we have Scholastic dollars that we can use to pay for that for her.
Principal report
  • Ms. Kent - Academic report/title - Today we finished third grade Mstep and K-2 literacy testing.  We are trying to provide the best testing environment for our kids.  Math night was awesome!  We will do that event again next year.  Family picnic will be May 20, it is an early release day as well.  Weather permitting, it will be 12-1.  The handout will go out in the next couple days.  If there is bad weather, we will stay in the classrooms.  K-1 spring concert is May 10.  K will go to Spectrum Health to celebrate Nurses week.  The BOGO book fair is on May .  Health and Fitness on May 27/ Mr. Shewan assembly same day in the morning.  Title - we have Mrs. Hearth and Mrs. Nagelbush full-time for reading and math.  We collect data, and are on our last round of data now.  Some will come in to review the data to decide if our program is working.  We have a great Title team and they are working hard!  They work with students that are behind or ahead. The goal is to have everyone at grade level.
Old Business
  • Teacher Appreciation - We’ve had some kinks….but it’s going okay!! Subway lunch for Thursday.  Amber will pick up giftcards.  Party at Emily's house on Friday after school.
New Business
  • Box Tops - Deater - We got a check for almost $800!  We haven’t collected any from May yet. Is anyone getting close to the goals?  Maat is the closest at 65%.  Our lowest at Cole at 20%.  Most classes are in the 20s.  Maybe put the numbers on Facebook to hopefully spur on some more box tops coming in.  Check in with the teachers May 20, before the next PTO meeting to see who  has reached their goals and decide party days on a case by case basis.
  • Labels - Becky -
  • Playground - Mandy - Equipment will go in this weekend.  Becky’s husband is in charge of the construction end of it.  There will be 4 individual, spinning, bouncy chairs.  There is a specific fall zone on these, but everything should be in and ready to go by Monday!  The husbands/dads will meet at 6pm Friday.  Saturday at 8am and Sunday at 9am.
  • BOGO Book Fair-This is a full blown book fair night.  Everything is BOGO of equal or lesser value.  One night only!!  From 5:30-7:30 May 18.  We cannot use scholastic dollars at this book fair.  If we hit $2200, they will give us a 10% bonus on our last two book fairs, which should make us around $1000.  We will be serving ice cream, Heather is in charge of ice cream. We have tables reserved, let them know that we would like a custodian here as well.
  • Health & Fitness day-Jaks bounce houses is all set
  • 4th grade clap out-We need a new order form for the shirts.  Janae will take this.  Emily will discuss further with Ms. Kent and Janae. Cookies have been ordered.
  • Mr. Shewan- Stefanya? - They have some jokes collected, we plan to put hand prints on the banner, and get some gift cards. Maybe a Cabellas, or Barnes & Nobles, Blue Cow for ideas.  Maybe $100 total. Let’s do two $50 gift cards. The Elliots are also making a bench.  Emily will pick this up.
  • Family picnic - May 20
  • Working on developing a budget - still in the process
  • Font cartridges - we have been asked to buy these for the cricut.  They are around $20 per cartridge, but can be more.  We had one and it has been lost.  Cooley is going to look into this.
