Treasure report - Mandy - Most expenses lately has been the PE equipment and Teacher Appreciation. Not much else.
Teacher report - Mrs. J. Defever & Mrs. Bender - We have a lot of field trips coming up, will PTO cover the cost for chaperones/volunteers?? YES!! Mrs. Defever will be teaching K next year and needs a rug. We can use Scholastic Dollars, Amber will send the link. Thank you for the extra Hokie stools and beans for the beanbags, the kids have really appreciated them!! The field trip forms are still the same for teachers to submit to PTO. Mrs. Bender has CDs that can be read with books and is looking to get a system for the kids to have a CD player with headphones. We can get this with Scholastic Dollars as well!!
Principal report - Academics reporting - We are in the last round of assessments, 3rd and 4th Grade are doing the MStep now. The kids are getting a little more of a break in between testing this year, which is nice. We won’t see results from that until the fall sometime. The teacher had some professional development over the last early release day.
Mr. Miller PE Stuff - Assembly reveal? The equipment is already being used, Mr. Miller is super excited about it all as well!! Maybe over Health and Fitness Day we will do a “reveal” of some sort.
Box tops - Maggie - We did receive a check from Box Tops. Maggie’s son will be moving up to 5th grade and she won’t be able to do Box Tops next year. Katie has volunteered to do Box Tops next year.
Shop-A-Roo - Katie - Nothing new. Mandy will check to see when we received the check last year. It doesn’t seem like we have many users. Maybe have a receipts basket for people to drop receipts. Or a table at the Walk-A-Thon to help people sign up.

General fund requests
Mrs. Zocco - Writing Practice Magnet board - $300. Approved.
Mrs. Hayes - Garden prep - Each grade will have it’s own raised bed - $180 - Raised bed, soil, mulch, garden tools, etc. Who will maintain the garden over the summer? Mrs. Hayes is willing to. Already $145 donated to the cause. Approved.
Mrs. Horvath - We need some ear covers for thermometer. We can order them on Amazon. We can maybe purchase a thermometer that doesn’t need replacement parts.
Super Teacher Worksheets
Health and Fitness Day - May 26 - This will start right after lunch - maybe we can do the P.E. Stuff after lunch. 10:30 or 11:00 for bounce houses since K goes out early.
Book Fair BOGO - Amber - May 15th (8-3 & 5:30-7:00) & 16th.(8-3) We will need help packing up Tuesday as Amber won’t be able to be here. Set up will be after school the Friday before (May 12). Sign ups are going around. During BOGO Book Fair, we can’t use the deal for Scholastic Dollars. We have to sell $2000 worth to make any money, but we are using this as a kick-off for Summer Reading.
4th Grade Clap Out - June 1 - The T-shirts will have a cardinal on the front and all the students names on the back. We have 150 cookies also.
Para Day - This Friday May 5 - We have gift cards to the Raven/Blue Cow - Maybe some balloons and a We Appreciate You on the white board. Cooley will handle it.
Treasure report - Mandy - Assembly and Book Fair was last month. And we also had some Professional Development as well.
Teacher report - Mrs. Fox - March is Reading month was a great success. Field trips are starting. Thank you for approving the third grade field trip coming up! The kids did enjoy all the books that were from book fair, so thank you for that!
Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report. We had a great month, we got in a lot of reading, and the school looked great! The assembly went well, the presenter was impressed with the energy of our school, and he complimented our student body.
Book Fair - We bought $2000 worth of books for the students and teachers. We still have scholastic dollars left. There are still a few teachers that haven’t used their Christmas gift money yet. We do have a BOGO book fair coming up - that will be May 15 & 16 in the gym. Monday evening would probably be the best night if we are going to do a night time event - 5:30-7:00. If we sell $2000, we will get $1000 in Scholastic dollars back.
March is Reading Month
Bean bags/Stools - We refilled some of the beanbags for the school, it was kind of a big mess!!! We still have some to fill, but perhaps in the future we will just purchase new bean bags to avoid the hassle.
FSU Engineering Class - Some of the teachers attended this event - they loved it! It is to help with STEM learning. Ferris may become the national hub for this STEM learning - so that may be an advantage for us!
Box tops - Maggie - No news - need to collect soon
Shop-A-Roo - Katie - no news
Labels - Becky - not much going
PE request - Mr. Miller - Is requesting some new equipment for P.E. Gopher is the go to brand for equipment, though it may be a little pricier, but they are high quality materials, so it may look expensive, but it should last! There is an assortment of balls, discs, scooters, etc. This equipment will STAY at Riverview. We are working on storage, and some new shelves as well. This is a great way for ALL of the kids to benefit from some of the Walk-A-Thon money raised!! We will vote on a maximum of $3300 and then Ms. Kent and Mr. Miller can get together on some of the details. Approved! Can we do a big “opening” and show all the kids assembly style??
New Benches by Bus - There has been a request to have the benches redone on the buses side of the building. It seems that they are very rarely used other than to jump off of. Let’s have them removed if needed.
Pavilion Meeting - The Pavilion is a little more involved than we initially thought, this is something that we are going to continue to work towards, but it is going to be awhile before it comes to fruition.
Health & Fitness Day - May 26 - We have reserved the inflatables through Jak’s already. We will need to reconfirm.
Family Picnic - May 19 - The menu is always hot dogs and the families can bring in any food the want. We will just keep the food out of the classrooms this year.
4th Grade Clap out - Are we having cookies?? Yes!! Mandy will order the cookies. Emily will order the T-shirts. Any suggestions for Tshirts?? A shirt with all of the classes names in the shape of a cardinal maybe? Or Class of 20--?
Para/Staff Day - Friday April 28 - Gift cards & balloons (Latex free) and decorations
Treasurer report - we have just over $17000 in our account right now, we are still having issues with our account due to our stolen card.
Principal report- Ms. Kent - Academics report - We are putting a lot of time into our state reporting. We have been talking to a lot of parents, and will be speaking to more to look at some of our documents. The family picnic went over really well, especially on the early release day. Health and Fitness day was canceled because of the weather, but we do plan to reschedule this sometime in the fall. We finished our Mstep at the end of May. The students and teachers are LOVING the field trips. Fourth grade clap out is tomorrow as well. Today was the day for negotiations for when school will start in the fall.
Teacher report - Mrs. Maat - Everything is going well, we have a lot of field trips going on right now. Thank you to the PTO for all the field trips. The testing has wrapped up and we are in the downslide.
Teacher appreciation - went really well!!
Family picnic - it was perfect weather, went well for early release
Health and fitness rescheduled - maybe do a back up day? Tough to schedule this time of year with all the kids out with field trips.
BOGO book fair - we sold around $1100, about $2200 value of books that went home. We didn’t have as much response to this book fair as before, but maybe because the kids didn’t see it at school, weather, etc. It was a great thing, just a tough time of year.
Playground - AWESOME! The kids seem to really like it, especially the spinner. There is a long line every recess for that one.
Mr. Shewan assembly - this was SO great!!! Thank you so much to the Elliot family for the bench!
Cartridges - Cooley cricut donation
Box tops - Jenn Deater/Amber - Mrs. Feltman’s can for box tops is missing and we cannot locate them! Mrs. Maat’s class is the closest to making the goal and they are at 78%. We will need to adjust our goals for next year so that we can have an attainable goal.
Labels - not much going on here
Fourth grade clap out - this is tomorrow!! It starts at 2. Heather is going to pick up stuff - shirts, we have lemonade and Mandy is on the cookies.
Angel ride donation - we donated $50 to them in the fall to be on a sign. We have another donation option from them, the lowest amount for donation now is $250. Should we wait and donate in the fall or jump for the $250? Let’s do $50 in the fall.
Field trips - Our total for field trips this year is just over $4600, which is much lower than last year by about $2000. Total major purchases make up about $17,282. We have spent around 75% of what we have raised at the walk-a-thon this year. We have still spoken about putting in a pavilion similar to what is at the high school tennis courts. We also have talked about putting in a water fountain. We will have to make some inquiries into cost of these items. Maybe we could set aside some money towards these purchases in the future. We would like to encourage the third graders to take a field trip, we have heard from some parents that would like to see them participate. We have also talked about a storage shed for the future.
Walk-a-thon meeting - Brookside has had a change in leadership, we will have our initial meeting on June 22 at BWW at 7pm. We may look at breaking off into committees this year. We are possibly bringing in the middle school to participate and eventually even the high school. Elementary will keep the corporate sponsors money.
Do we want to renew or movie license? Our last movie showing we had a lot of rowdy kids. How can we enforce behavior? We need to address this for next year. We have had a lot of request for a carnival, or an international night, or a globe trotter night, sledding party. Maybe we will move to do this events next year instead of movie night and see what the response is.
Girls on the run - haven’t seen a bill yet
Officer elections - we are still working on bylaws. We are looking to break out the treasurer role from the president role. Emily would like to nominate Mandy for the treasurer position. Unless everyone has any objections, we can keep rolling with the positions we have. Everyone is in favor.
Treasurer report - Our credit card has been stolen, so there have been some issues with that. Otherwise, there hasn’t been much for the month of April.
Mrs. Defever and Mrs. Krebs - The teacher say PTO is totally awesome!! Thank you for making everyone feel special! Fourth grade has sent in forms for field trips. Fourth grade will be seeing the little red school house out at School Section Lake. Third grade will be going to Cran Hill soon as well. We will not be allowed to bring pizza. It will be weather dependent. Mrs. Krebs would like class shirts for her class when they go to field trips etc. 25 Lime Green shirts all adult small size. Mrs. Bender has a field trip request form to submit for 1st grade. May 31, Tuesday, they want one bus. We will cover the cost for admission and buses. 1st grade also wants to go to the Roller Rink on June 1 at $3 a student. They also want to walk the kids to Hemlock at some point, and are asking for $1 per student to get the kids ice cream at State Street Scoops. Mrs. Zocco has a request for a colorful carpet, we have Scholastic dollars that we can use to pay for that for her.
Ms. Kent - Academic report/title - Today we finished third grade Mstep and K-2 literacy testing. We are trying to provide the best testing environment for our kids. Math night was awesome! We will do that event again next year. Family picnic will be May 20, it is an early release day as well. Weather permitting, it will be 12-1. The handout will go out in the next couple days. If there is bad weather, we will stay in the classrooms. K-1 spring concert is May 10. K will go to Spectrum Health to celebrate Nurses week. The BOGO book fair is on May . Health and Fitness on May 27/ Mr. Shewan assembly same day in the morning. Title - we have Mrs. Hearth and Mrs. Nagelbush full-time for reading and math. We collect data, and are on our last round of data now. Some will come in to review the data to decide if our program is working. We have a great Title team and they are working hard! They work with students that are behind or ahead. The goal is to have everyone at grade level.
Teacher Appreciation - We’ve had some kinks….but it’s going okay!! Subway lunch for Thursday. Amber will pick up giftcards. Party at Emily's house on Friday after school.
Box Tops - Deater - We got a check for almost $800! We haven’t collected any from May yet. Is anyone getting close to the goals? Maat is the closest at 65%. Our lowest at Cole at 20%. Most classes are in the 20s. Maybe put the numbers on Facebook to hopefully spur on some more box tops coming in. Check in with the teachers May 20, before the next PTO meeting to see who has reached their goals and decide party days on a case by case basis.

Playground - Mandy - Equipment will go in this weekend. Becky’s husband is in charge of the construction end of it. There will be 4 individual, spinning, bouncy chairs. There is a specific fall zone on these, but everything should be in and ready to go by Monday! The husbands/dads will meet at 6pm Friday. Saturday at 8am and Sunday at 9am.
BOGO Book Fair-This is a full blown book fair night. Everything is BOGO of equal or lesser value. One night only!! From 5:30-7:30 May 18. We cannot use scholastic dollars at this book fair. If we hit $2200, they will give us a 10% bonus on our last two book fairs, which should make us around $1000. We will be serving ice cream, Heather is in charge of ice cream. We have tables reserved, let them know that we would like a custodian here as well.
Health & Fitness day-Jaks bounce houses is all set
4th grade clap out-We need a new order form for the shirts. Janae will take this. Emily will discuss further with Ms. Kent and Janae. Cookies have been ordered.
Mr. Shewan- Stefanya? - They have some jokes collected, we plan to put hand prints on the banner, and get some gift cards. Maybe a Cabellas, or Barnes & Nobles, Blue Cow for ideas. Maybe $100 total. Let’s do two $50 gift cards. The Elliots are also making a bench. Emily will pick this up.
Family picnic - May 20
Working on developing a budget - still in the process
Font cartridges - we have been asked to buy these for the cricut. They are around $20 per cartridge, but can be more. We had one and it has been lost. Cooley is going to look into this.
Treasurer report - not too much going on here, besides $3000 for playground. There are some field trip/bus expenditures here as well.
Teacher report - Mrs. Fox - Mrs. Scheible was wondering about K field trip May 4 - The grant came through for Mrs. Garner for the children’s museum K field trip, so they will just need buses covered. It will be around $530. Approved. Third grade would like to take a big field trip as well. May 10 is agriculture day at Cran Hill Ranch. The main expense would be buses and lunch. Probably around 2 parent chaperones per class, will stick with pizza and etc. for lunch. Mrs. Maat would like a field trip to the nature center on June 2. There is a $5 entry fee and busing. Fourth grade is expected to do a robot field trip as well. Let’s just agree to approve any field trip that comes our way!! Testing is going on now. Third grade will start Mstep testing on April 25, it will take about 3 days. Parents will get some notes home regarding the testing soon. There is a make up time later on in May if anyone misses. We are trying to give the kids some warning that this is coming, but not any pressure, plus some supportive notes from parents. March is reading month was a huge success. We are looking forward to the spaghetti throw at Ms. Kent which is the “reward” for reaching March reading goals.
Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report- K&1 are working on the early literacy tests with Mr. Posey. Chromebooks are getting a lot of use. Testing is coming up and there is a lot prep going on for that. The dance for March reading wrap up was a big hit. Calling all Dads was a super success too, there was a bigger turn out this year!! It was pretty short and sweet but well received.
Girls on the run sponsor - Thanks to Mandy and Dave to reaching out to Gary Trimarco!!
Book Fair - We sold almost $4900 worth of books!! The best one ever...we spent $2000 on books for the kids and teachers, we have over $2000 left in scholastic dollars. They offered us a BOGO free book fair on May 18 5:30-7:30. It will be a one night event, we won’t make money off of this. We also talked about offering info on Khan academy and Grasp at the event. Grasp forms already needed to be turned in. If we sell $2200, we would make a little money. We will serve some ice cream that night as well. Heather will take care of the ice cream. Thanks to Heather and Megan for organizing the nachos and everyone who helped serve.
Assemblies - We had the science assembly and the reading assembly. The reading assembly was a bust. It was 45-60 minutes and the guy just couldn’t keep the attention of the kids. The science one was a big hit though.
Teacher conference - the food was a big hit!!
Box tops- everything is going well.
Labels - no new news
Mr. Shewan- Emily will meet with Stefanya later to hash through this - What if we did Mr. Shewan from 8;30-9:00 on May 26, then everyone can go out to do health and fitness stuff afterwards.
Buddy Bench- thank you for the idea Leslie Green! A buddy bench is a bench where kids can go if they don’t have anyone to play with. There is a bunch there already….let’s talk about this later!
Signs out front - We had an idea for a post that would we could put a vinyl sticker for the teachers name on the side. Will the groundskeeping have a problem with this? Renee will talk to Steve regarding it.
Family picnic - We may move this to Friday, June 3. School will be extended until either June 6 or 7.
Health and Fitness day - May 26 - We want the three bounce houses like last year! Can we get the bounce house up and ready by 10:30.
Fourth grade clap out - June 2nd. Around 150 cookies- no oatmeal raisin! Chewy cookies please! Emily will do the shirts & keychains. What about having a t-shirt design contest?
Playground - The new equipment will be here next week. Russ Curtis will help us out with installing so we will see when he will be available before we set a date to install it.
Treasurer report - Emily is still having trouble getting into our bank account, but we have had just a few little deductions and should have around $24,000.
Teacher report - Mrs. Garner - What are we doing with Mr. Shewans jokes?? Stefanya says she will volunteer to take this project over!! Everyone knows that something is in the works, but we need to communicate what is going on to all the teachers. The assembly will be May 27. K would like to go on a field trip to the Grand Rapids children’s museum. Mrs. Garner has applied for a grant from the museum, if it is not received, they will be asking for assistance for the the two K classes. Just like last years field trip.
Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report - we kept the small kids in for morning recess because of the ice and slush. It was a big slushy mess at the soccer field today too. Lunch recess we did not go out. The drainage is working well, though! We had the science fair, and had a lot of great feedback from that! We had 4 snowdays in February, we are as of now, making up 3. We have mostly finished our winter assessments. K-2 are taking a state test this year, similar to the Mstep. We are piloting that this year. We are getting 60 more chromebooks, this should help with 3-4 getting testing done a little sooner. The ipads were reinstated, we are getting 19 back. We are asking for a cart for the ipads. Book fair is coming up. We had a lockdown drill at lunch and it went super well! The whole district sets a day for lockdown drills. We have some Ferris people coming in to do some reading, lots of different groups coming in for reading month! March 29 is calling all dads.
Charging cart - we approved this last meeting
Rink Party - success
Science Fair - success
Assemblies - science/magic assembly was well received!!!
March reading month
Girls on the run - we tabled the vote for this from the last meeting - this is a unique situation - there has been a miscommunication where it has been communicated that PTO will cover the cost of the shoes. There have been 31 girls signed up, and the cost would be $15 per pair. There is also a $45 registration fee. 7 for No and 6 for Yes. Is there a way that some of us could individually sponsor some of the students to make sure no one who has signed up will miss out? We need to say something to explain this situation. Maybe we can send a form out to the parents of those who have signed up that says PTO will not cover the costs, however, there are some parents/businesses who will sponsor those who are in need of shoes to participate for this program. Can we state that you do not have to have the specific pair of shoes to participate?
Box tops - Deater is not here - it looks like we are receiving a check for $1000+
Labels - the program is ending slowly, We can submit for a period of time, and we do have a point balance that we can redeem.
Next book fair- next week- the sign up sheet is going around, the set up will be Friday at 6pm. It will be in the library until Wednesday, then to the gym for the nacho night, then back to the library for the rest of the week. Heather has everything arranged for the nachos.
Fill-a-tub - We were approached to fill a tote for each teachers room with snowgear, boots, gloves, etc. Should we separate them by size? To be brought in book fair night, we will have the tubs set up in the hallway. Reading night is also going on that night.
Teacher conferences - this is March 17. Make something light, Jenn Ames can order it if someone else can bring it. Appetizers would be best. Stephanie will take care of it!!
Assemblies - We have one left, Reading Month Assembly March 15 at 8:30am
Teacher Appreciation - XX
Playground - can Curtis help with this project? Let’s do this!! We do also have a canopy catalog to look at if we are still interested in that. The company is out of Holland, WHPorter pavilion. Something similar to the pavilion near the tennis court. A water fountain too?
Mr. Shewan - Stefanya will take this over - the joke book - surprise assembly
Signs for the sidewalk - we have looked into this. Stefanya’s husband will volunteer to make them is reimbursed for supplies!! What kind of options do we have?
