April 2017 Meeting Minutes

4/6/2017

  • Call meeting to order - Introductions
  • Approval of March minutes - Deater
  • Treasure report - Mandy - Assembly and Book Fair was last month. And we also had some Professional Development as well.
  • Teacher report - Mrs. Fox - March is Reading month was a great success.  Field trips are starting.  Thank you for approving the third grade field trip coming up!  The kids did enjoy all the books that were from book fair, so thank you for that!
  • Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report. We had a great month, we got in a lot of reading, and the school looked great!  The assembly went well, the presenter was impressed with the energy of our school, and he complimented our student body.
  • Old Business:
    • Book Fair - We bought $2000 worth of books for the students and teachers.  We still have scholastic dollars left.  There are still a few teachers that haven’t used their Christmas gift money yet.  We do have a BOGO book fair coming up - that will be May 15 & 16 in the gym. Monday evening would probably be the best night if we are going to do a night time event - 5:30-7:00.  If we sell $2000, we will get $1000 in Scholastic dollars back.
    • March is Reading Month
    • Bean bags/Stools - We refilled some of the beanbags for the school, it was kind of a big mess!!! We still have some to fill, but perhaps in the future we will just purchase new bean bags to avoid the hassle.
    • FSU Engineering Class - Some of the teachers attended this event - they loved it!  It is to help with STEM learning. Ferris may become the national hub for this STEM learning - so that may be an advantage for us!
  • New Business:
    • Box tops - Maggie - No news - need to collect soon
    • Shop-A-Roo - Katie - no news
    • Labels - Becky - not much going
    • PE request - Mr. Miller - Is requesting some new equipment for P.E. Gopher is the go to brand for equipment, though it may be a little pricier, but they are high quality materials, so it may look expensive, but it should last!  There is an assortment of balls, discs, scooters, etc.  This equipment will STAY at Riverview.  We are working on storage, and some new shelves as well.   This is a great way for ALL of the kids to benefit from some of the Walk-A-Thon money raised!!  We will vote on a maximum of $3300 and then Ms. Kent and Mr. Miller can get together on some of the details. Approved! Can we do a big “opening” and show all the kids assembly style??
    • New Benches by Bus - There has been a request to have the benches redone on the buses side of the building.  It seems that they are very rarely used other than to jump off of.  Let’s have them removed if needed.
    • Pavilion Meeting - The Pavilion is a little more involved than we initially thought, this is something that we are going to continue to work towards, but it is going to be awhile before it comes to fruition.
    • Health & Fitness Day - May 26 - We have reserved the inflatables through Jak’s already.  We will need to reconfirm.
    • Family Picnic - May 19  - The menu is always hot dogs and the families can bring in any food the want.  We will just keep the food out of the classrooms this year.
    • 4th Grade Clap out - Are we having cookies??  Yes!! Mandy will order the cookies.  Emily will order the T-shirts. Any suggestions for Tshirts??  A shirt with all of the classes names in the shape of a cardinal maybe?  Or Class of 20--?
    • Para/Staff Day - Friday April 28  - Gift cards & balloons (Latex free) and decorations
    • Teacher Appreciation - May 1-5
    • Last day of School - June 8 tentatively

  • Call meeting to order
  • Introductions
  • Approval of February minutes - Deater
  • Treasure report - Mandy - Very light month, there were some refunds from the Dollar Store and the purchase of the padcaster.
  • Teacher report - Mrs. Zocco, Mr. Posey, Mrs. Lamar - Science and Social studies night, great kick off to reading month today - we had NO snow days in February
  • Principal report - Ms. Kent -  Academics report. The video from the padcaster equipment was AWESOME!! We got a green screen that came with, and we will add more to our supply.  A new green screen has been ordered and it will be much larger and will be more versatile. Thanks to PTO for getting that for us!! Our staff was amazing for the start of March is reading month.  We had a lot of special people in the building today to for celebrating.  Science night was a great success again.  If you would like to be a guest reader, let us know!  This is a big month for us.  Testing is all done for now.
  • Old Business:
    • Science fair
  • New Business
    • Box tops - Maggie - Just submitted the last one, we should get around $330ish dollars.  It will be the last check we will get for the year.
    • Labels - Becky - We still have points, becky has a current catalog to pass on to Mr. Miller or whoever may need anything from it.
    • Shoparoo - Katie
    • Assembly ideas - Reading committee has an assembly picked out for March 17 that will incorporate March is reading month. $650 approved.
    • Spring book fair - Amber - March 13-17.  There will be a sign up sheet going around for anyone who will be able to help out.  For family night, we do not have any food or extras going, so we will just need a few people to help inside the book fair.  Family night is from 5:30 - 7:00.  We have been contacted about doing the BOGO book fair again this year.  We sold about $1500 last year from this event, is anyone interested in doing this again.  It is a little difficult scheduling this event??  Maybe we could run in over a couple days and do it during the daytime so everyone can get a chance to see it all?  Let’s do it!  Amber and Ms. Kent will get together and find a couple of options for dates.
    • Health & Fitness Day -
    • Field trips - This is floating along. Pass it on to the teachers!!
      • K went in the fall, they usually go to the Children’s Museum in the spring?
      • 1st - Usually goes to the zoo
      • 2nd - Howard Christensen nature center
      • 3rd - Fifth Third Ballpark education day in May - school kids day - the game will last 1.5 - 2 hours.  Phys ed style events on the side.  $8 per child for lawn seats packing their own lunch.  We have 3 classrooms, so they would need 2 buses. Either May 17 or 24.
      • 4th - Grand rapids public museum and School section lake schoolhouse
    • K team reading training - There is a reading training for K teachers, Mrs. Scheible and Mrs. Quinlan has already been through it. It involves some new teaching techniques, it goes through GVSU. It would be $150 per teacher and we would send 3 teachers.  This would be a great opportunity for our K teachers!  We approve!
    • Auto Owners - Science fair event
    • Mrs. Defever 2.0 beanbags and tippy stools - The third grade did a persuasive writing project and they really like the tippy stools and their beanbags need some refill beans.  They were asking us if we could fund those upgrades.  We can use some Scholastic dollars for some of those items!  We will get 6 new stools and we can get beans for anyone who needs them in all the classrooms.  The stand up desks are still going well too!
    • On March 17 there is an all day training at the University that would include 2 tool kits for them to use in Engineering projects in the classroom.  It is related to the women in Engineering event that we ran last year.  If there are any teachers that are interested it would be $598 for two teachers.  Anyone interested can talk to Angie Mishler.  Angie will pass on the info to Ms. Kent.
    • Is there any interest for our school in doing a 3D printer?  We would have to check with our tech guy to see, but it is something we would consider in the future. We will take any opportunity to get some new technology in our kids hands!!
    • Mrs. Lamar - Looking into getting some new instruments for the school.  Would love to have instruments that wouldn’t have to be shared between us and Brookside and have a cart to transport the instruments.  We definitely want to help out with this!!
    • Teacher appreciation
    • 4th grade clap out is June 1st probably 1:45-2:45ish.

We need bus drivers!!! If you know anyone, pass it on!!

Next meeting is April 5.

  • Call meeting to order
  • Approval of March minutes
  • Treasurer report - not too much going on here, besides $3000 for playground.  There are some field trip/bus expenditures here as well.
  • Teacher report - Mrs. Fox - Mrs. Scheible was wondering about K field trip May 4 - The grant came through for Mrs. Garner for the children’s museum K field trip, so they will just need buses covered.  It will be around $530.  Approved. Third grade would like to take a big field trip as well.  May 10 is agriculture day at Cran Hill Ranch.  The main expense would be buses and lunch.  Probably around 2 parent chaperones per class, will stick with pizza and etc. for lunch.  Mrs. Maat would like a field trip to the nature center on  June 2.   There is a $5 entry fee and busing.  Fourth grade is expected to do a robot field trip as well.  Let’s just agree to approve any field trip that comes our way!!  Testing is going on now.  Third grade will start Mstep testing on April 25, it will take about 3 days. Parents will get some notes home regarding the testing soon.  There is a make up time later on in May if anyone misses.  We are trying to give the kids some warning that this is coming, but not any pressure, plus some supportive notes from parents.  March is reading month was a huge success.  We are looking forward to the spaghetti throw at Ms. Kent which is the “reward” for reaching March reading goals.
  • Principal report - Ms. Kent - Academics report- K&1 are working on the early literacy tests with Mr. Posey.  Chromebooks are getting a lot of use.  Testing is coming up and there is a lot prep going on for that.  The dance for March reading wrap up was a big hit.  Calling all Dads was a super success too, there was a bigger turn out this year!!  It was pretty short and sweet but well received.
  • Old Business:
    • Girls on the run sponsor - Thanks to Mandy and Dave to reaching  out to Gary Trimarco!!
    • Book Fair - We sold almost $4900 worth of books!!  The best one ever...we spent $2000 on books for the kids and teachers, we have over $2000 left in scholastic dollars.  They offered us a BOGO free book fair on May 18 5:30-7:30.  It will be a one night event, we won’t make money off of this.  We also talked about offering info on Khan academy and Grasp at the event.  Grasp forms already needed to be turned in.  If we sell $2200, we would make a little money.  We will serve some ice cream that night as well.  Heather will take care of the ice cream.    Thanks to Heather and Megan for organizing the nachos and everyone who helped serve.
    • Assemblies - We had the science assembly and the reading assembly.  The reading assembly was a bust.  It was 45-60 minutes and the guy just couldn’t keep the attention of the kids.  The science one was a big hit though.
    • Teacher conference - the food was a big hit!!

  • New Business:
    • Box tops- everything is going well.
    • Labels - no new news
    • Mr. Shewan- Emily will meet with Stefanya later to hash through this - What if we did Mr. Shewan from 8;30-9:00 on May 26, then everyone can go out to do health and fitness stuff afterwards.
    • Buddy Bench- thank you for the idea Leslie Green!  A buddy bench is a bench where kids can go if they don’t have anyone to play with. There is a bunch there already….let’s talk about this later!
    • Signs out front - We had an idea for a post that would we could put a vinyl sticker for the teachers name on the side.  Will the groundskeeping have a problem with this?  Renee will talk to Steve regarding it.
    • Family picnic -  We may move this to Friday, June 3. School will be extended until either June 6 or 7.
    • Health and Fitness day - May 26 - We want the three bounce houses like last year! Can we get the bounce house up and ready by 10:30.
    • Fourth grade clap out - June 2nd.   Around 150 cookies- no oatmeal raisin! Chewy cookies please!  Emily will do the shirts & keychains.  What about having a t-shirt design contest?
    • Playground - The new equipment will be here next week.  Russ Curtis will help us out with installing so we will see when he will be available before we set a date to install it.
    • Teacher appreciation - XXXX :)
  •        Movie night - April 29 - Meet the Robinsons?

  • Budget - still a work in progress

  • Mrs. McKenna/Zocco-She is very impressed with our PTO at Riverview! Kids are excited for the valentine dance party.  Thank you for the bunsen burners.  Science fair (Feb 23rd) participation seems to be down this year as it is optional.  Consider sending a reminder to parents.  Girls Engineering is also happening on Feb 22nd-this is a program through ferris which attempts to get girls excited about engineering.  Teachers are looking for options for the boys. Calling all moms is Feb 22nd as well as the star lab. 2nd-4th grade will be attending the Middle Schools’ “The Lion King” Feb 18th at the High School.
  • Principal Report-N/A

  • Standing Desks-Going well.
  • Hokie Stools
  • Scholastic dollars -books for rooms, rugs, and other supplies have arrived.
  • Cran Hill Field Trip-the weather and snow days have put a damper on this event.  on hold for now.
New Business:
  • What to spend the Walk-Money on?
  • Do we want to spend money on a charging cart?  Vote in favor of purchasing 1 charging cart.
  • We do have end of year field trips coming up, need to save about $5,000 for that.
  • Riverview is receiving $20,000 in technology early next school year, so it is advised to wait on spending any money on technology this year.
  • We will be purchasing about $3,000 is playground equipment for the upper elementary area.
  • Consider a canopy for shade on the playground-might have to save for a couple years.
  • New teacher signs for the sidewalk are in the works.
Roller rink rental:
  • Amber and Jamie will be representing PTO. We will raffle off roller rink passes that were left over from the walk a thon.
  • Extra party - Feb 12th from 12:30-2:30.  PTO has 3 busses, they will take a group to the roller rink and then come back for more.
  • Any cute ideas? Play games like they do on skates.
  • Should we do cake? Cookies have been ordered and PTO will take care of water.
  • Need to clarify a few things with teachers and parents:
  • No outside food will be accepted
  • No siblings
  • We do not recommend taking children home from the skating rink.
Science Fair:
  • Feb 23rd 5:30-7:00, do we reserve tables?  Science committee has taken care of that.  Might want more for 4th grade “State Project”
  • Committed to the money to help.  Angie Mishler is coordinating and PTO will reimburse.
Assemblies:
  • Put the down payment on assembly $50
  • Science or Magic-Keith Fields will be entertaining the school on Feb 29th from 1:30-2:15.  Total is $550

  • Star Lab will be at the school on Feb 22nd for classrooms to visit.
Box tops:
  • Jennifer Deater-All updated and ready to go.  Next box top submission date is March 1-please get in all box tops by then.  We will continue to collect all year.
Labels:
  • Becky-New news from LFE-This program will be dissolving.  Campbell's is pulling out of the program but it sounds like we can submit anything with a LFE logo until Aug 17.  We currently have about 25,000 points.
Next Book Fair:
  • March 14-March 18th-sign up to help at next month's meeting or let us know your availability.  Cooley can work Friday.  Parks can work Monday.
  • Teachers will submit wish list.
  • Groovy 70’s theme
  • Wed March 16 Family Dinner
  • Keep Nachos -Heather and Megan are taking care of this.
Girls on the run-a program for 3rd and 4th graders.
  • Will we provide the $15 shoes for the girls who can’t afford them?
  • City offers scholarship programs for the entry fee, but not the shoes.  PTO likes this idea, but will we be asked to help for soccer, basketball, etc? Let's get an idea of how many kids from Renee before approving at the next meeting.
Teacher Appreciation
  • We have idea, kept off the minutes for spying eyes.
Mr. Shewan:
  • Set assembly date (I was thinking… just do one at the end-March 27th)
  • Get notice out to the classes about their “special” tasks.  Do the teachers want to “adopt” a month/week and do something special. Then jokes if they would like for the end assembly?
Movie night:
  • We would like to fit one more in at least.  Ask Renee for dates in March (Feb has a lot going on).
Fill a tub:
  • Teachers expressed concern about the lack of gym shoes/outdoor clothing.  We thought of doing a “Fill the tub” at the Book Fair family night.  If your family brings in an item (boots, shoes, gloves, snowpants), you get a raffle ticket for a $25 scholastic gift card.  Teachers could keep the tubs in their room.
Working on developing a budget
Still in the process

Our Mission is to instill in all Riverview students a healthy self-image, a love of learning and the desire to achieve their best in tomorrow’s world.

October 2015 Meeting Minutes

10/8/2015

  • Call meeting to order - introductions
  • Approval of September minutes
Treasurer report
Anything on the report with a star is split with Brookside, lots of little things from Walkathon and Gaga Pit, etc.

Teacher report -
Mrs. Zocco - We have had a lot of great safety drills.  Walkathon was a huge motivator for the kids, and everyone was really excited to monitor it in the classrooms.  Some of the testing going on has been going really well.

Principal report
Ms. Kent - Academic report - Drills have been going really well.  Lockdown drills have gone over well.  We had police on site for this.  Everything went silent right away.  We had a fire drill today, overseen by Mrs. Fox, which also went well.  Everyone is getting really riled up to throw water balloons!!! There is a public safety team that is doing a mock child abduction that will be simulated at Brookside, the child being “abducted” is an officer's child.  They have a specific procedure they will be following.  In this situation, we would remain in lockdown but continue with classes. This is a great practice for them.

Old Business
-Walkathon - was a GREAT success!!  Friday is the last day for collections.  We can change the time for deadlines.  Our deadline will be midnight.  $100 buckets will be filled on Tuesday.  It was too disruptive to do this during the day.  We can change this for next year.  Everything will be done before the assembly on Thursday.

-We are in the middle of Tshirt sales, but it is going over well.  We are selling the Tshirts at cost, meaning we are NOT making a profit. Deadline for orders is Friday.

-Ice machine - thank you Parks family

-Gaga pit - also a HUGE success

-Kindergarten went on a field trip to the apple orchards this week.  We did cover the expenses for this.

-Homecoming - we bought a bubble machine for the float that we will use in the future.  Elsa was fabulous.

New Business
-We are going to do a survey this year, it is already started.  We will NOT consider changing companies, and we will do the walkathon again next year.  Otherwise, we are looking for feedback about PTO and walkathon and what parents would prefer us to do with the money.

-Incentive run down - the lanyards are pretty much all handed out.  We will have only one prize per student no matter how many times their names are drawn.  We are having a little blip with Great Wolf, they did not donate so we will have to pay out of pocket for this.  We are also having some push back from the roller rink, so we are going to approach them with another way.  We can rent it for a specific day perhaps.  Amber Davis is going to look into this for us and find out all the details.

-Halloween gift - we have given glow sticks or other things in the past. Do we want to do this this year?  Let’s not, we are doing a lot of other small things, so let’s pass on this.

-Mobi Max - there is a lot of interest in this, so we will do this for $699 for the whole school.

-Movie night - the licensing company contacted us.  We had a great turnout last year, let’s do it again this year.  We are looking at Fri. Nov 6 and we want to show the movie “Inside Out”  We do have concessions for this event as well.  Angie Mishler can send an evite notice out to honor students, which was a great help with concessions.

-Wreath sales - can someone please take this over?  Stefanya will take this over.  Megan has done this in the past and can help out. We are NOT doing this as a money maker.  We do this because of the demand.  We charge just enough to cover the cost.

-Parent Teacher Conferences - We serve the teachers dinner. Jennifer Ames is going to take this over.  We have 13 teachers, maybe plan to serve 15.  We could also do a desert sign up.

-Box Tops - does anyone want to take over Box Tops from Amber?  It requires collecting them, cutting them, sending them in, etc.  Amber can still help.  We make about $2000-$3000 a year off of this.  We do have a deadline at the end of the month which will result in a check in December.  Amber Davis and Tanya Parks will help with this.

-Holiday Shop - We did not like the Reindeer Lane company last year.  Tanya has a contact with a company that does this.  We may need to order stuff through catalogs, but we would need to move now if we went that route.  The Dollar Store may be a great way to go.  That way we can make everything just a dollar or two at most.  We did check to make sure that we can resell these items last year.  Emily has room to store.  We can contact the dollar store people to see what kind of inventory they have and what our options are.

-Book Fair - Our theme is Monsters.  This is our next big thing.  It will be Oct. 28, Wednesday night, from 5-7pm.  We need help serving the ice cream, tidying the book fair, selling books.  We also have sign up times during the week.  Amber will send out a link to show those who sign up how to use the register.  It is super easy to use. If you volunteer you get 10% off.  This is our smaller one, the spring one is bigger.  We do get scholastic dollars that we get to choose items from a catalog with.  We used these funds to buy lots of things for the classrooms.  We spent $7700 in books and classroom stuff last year.  We are considering setting up a table at our Book Fair night for everyone to pick up their loot from the Walk-a-thon and the Tshirt sale.  We will still send items out to those who can’t attend.  Can we do a wish list for book fair items too?  We can send this home with the book fair letter, or have the teachers have the wish list for the students as they tour.

-Match Day - Tuesday, November 10 from 11-6.  We bring in all of our money and since we are non-profit, you get a certain % of money back.  Someone has to sit at the table all day and we have to decorate our table - the theme is Black & Silver.  All of the non profits in the county are there and donations are made.

-Budget - We have started working on this.  What we have so far is on the google drive, so look at it and see what you think.  We are trying to develop it, but as of now, we don’t have a guideline.  We want to spend the money.  We want the kids that are in the building this year need to reap the rewards of what we have made from the walkathon.  We spent around 85% last year, and we need to spend it on the kids.

-Thank yous to the corporate sponsors.  Let’s have the kids make some!

-Mr. Shewan - our custodian will be leaving after this year.  We missed custodial appreciation day!!  We want to do some fun things to show our appreciation for everything he does in the school.  We could make a movie.  We could give each classroom a month.  Maybe a flash mob, or the marching band at the end of the year.

March 2015 Meeting Minutes

Treasurer report
-Chrome books have gone through!

 Teachers report
-  Mrs. Krebs - Thank you for the scholastic book wish list!!  Lots of chatter about what to buy!! The science fair went over well, especially considering the weather.  Angie Mishler was a big help for this event.  It went over really well.  Some thought there could be more time to allow for people to get to everything.  Ipads are going over well.  It seems like they is getting more and more use.  Would a training session on the ipads be useful?? A training may already in the works.

-Mrs. Quinlan - Resource room could use a prescription for mobimax which runs $90 for the year. It is $600 for the school for the year.  The free version is limited access.  It would be very fitting for the resource room to have full access. We approve to give her the $100 for the remainder of the year. A Leaptag pen would be another piece that could be very helpful.  Some people have some that can be donated.

 Principal report
- Academic and title report. March is reading month is up and running.  There are also a lot of events going on throughout the month. Testing is coming up.  And the book fair is also coming up.  Parent teacher conferences invitation only is coming up on the March 19.  The playground will likely be under water shortly.  First testing will start in April.  Thanks again for all your support.

Old Business
- Calling all Moms was a huge success.  Also, movie night was a huge success.  Is it possible to do another one?  We will have to check with the licensing to see if we can swing it.  Could we find a time at the end of May to schedule another one?

 New Business
- Lucky to Have You (dads day) will not take place on St. Patricks Day.  Perhaps the Friday that week would work?  Monday the 16th should work.  Let’s get shamrock cookies for that morning as well.

-Book Fair - Will Angie sell the smencils on the book fair night? The dinner will cost $290.  Ms. Kent has a fund that can cover the cost.  We qualified for the deluxe book fair this time.  Can we cancel library again over the week?  We will have book fair Monday through Wednesday in the gym and Thursday and Friday in the library.  So we will move book fair from gym to library after book fair night Wednesday.  We will need to order the tables, can we get the tables on Friday March 13?  In March, we typically buy each student a book.  We can use our scholastics money for that.  We should be able to stick to about $5 or less per book.  Book Fair will be open during school hours for the week of March 16-20.  We will have two raffle baskets like last time.  There will also be a reading night going on that Wednesday.

-We will be getting a renovation on the playground.

-Panera is doing a fundraiser night.  You have to bring in a certain number of flyers to get a good percentage back.  Should we look into this?  Should we send out some feelers to see if any parents would be interested in it?

-Second grade wants to go on a field trip to Meijer gardens.  It would be about $1400, so they are thinking of scrapping it.  Can we ask the parents to put forth $5 per student to help offset the cost?  Let’s get the paperwork from them and see if we could swing it.  They are also considering going to the nature center as well.

-Lynn Scheible at ArtWorks contacted Emily about doing art with the 4th grade.  Ms. Kent has a meeting with her and will discuss this further.

-Recycle Week coming up in April.

-Mrs. Booher the librarian asked for a die cutter machine.  They run about $50 per letter.  Perhaps get more specifics to see what exactly she needs.

-Box Tops Competition at Ferris or at the High School.  Maybe at the start of next year.Box Tops are down, but it is mostly because they aren’t making any of the bonus tops right now.

-Amber will call Pizza Hut and ask about the Book It.

-The kids keep asking about a black light party.  They also have requested music over the speaker at lunch recess.

-We are looking at June 1 or 2 for the health fair.

Treasurer Report
-After all other expenses, we paid out $40+ dollars for the Holiday shop, which is great! Money from Box Tops and Match Day as well.  January was a pretty quiet month.

-Playground-Meeting on the 10th to go over playground info.  We are anticipating being asked to pay for a structure of some sort on the playground.  Ms. Kent prefers a K-2 unit and also a gaga pit. Are they considering eliminating anything on the playground?? There have been a lot injury's on the monkey bars.

Teacher Report - Mrs. Scheible
- Teachers needs - K could use another iPad to facilitate centers or in-class academic time.

-Field Trips-K, 2, & 3 are looking at field trips.  K wants to go to The Childrens Museum in GR. 2 wants to go to a Nature center in Cedar Springs.  3 wants to go to a place in Howard City.  4 does a lot of little things in April/May usually.

-Scholastic resources and the catalog - the teacher are all looking at it.  After the next book fair, we should be sitting on about $5000.  K teachers looking at a listening center for the ipads, we should go ahead and order them now.  They do not have ipads through scholastics however.  Have not heard from some of the other teachers yet as to what they are interested in.  We want to let the teachers know that we want to get these things for them, we don’t want them to be afraid to ask!!  All the teachers got $250 and $1500 worth of books for classrooms and $1000 for the library.  Want to do a reading night on the book fair night.  Have a bigger book fair night and a dinner on March 18th.  Do the center hall for the reading night.  We can give a gift certificate to the book fair for the raffle.  We ran the math night from 5:30 - 7:30 and will run the same times for the reading night.

Old Business
-Super Teacher worksheets - we will not pair with Brookside

-Technology - 30 iPads for the cart, 10 iPads for K, and 5 Chromebooks

-We have bought 10 chromebooks but we have yet to see them.  We are also waiting on the soccer nets, though we are waiting for the playground info to come back before moving forward.

-We have a logo for walk-a-thon sponsored items.

-Calling all Moms coming up.

New Business
-Dads day - Perhaps around St. Pattys “We’re lucky to have you” maybe with some shamrock cookies, etc.

-Movie night - Honors kids will have their sign up tomorrow, so we will know how many to expect.  If we have enough, we can do a drop off event.  Big Hero Six will be the movie.

-Book Fair - what are we gonna serve? We have done both nachos and spaghetti in the past.  Walking tacos??  Our theme is something to do with music.  We do not have to go through the school for the food.  Nachos were a big hit last year.  Ms. Kent may have an idea of how many we served.  We did brownies for dessert last year, and it worked well.  Let’s keep everything through the food service to keep things simple.

-We have qualified for a premium book fair this time around, so it will be bigger.  It worked really well to have library cancelled for the week last time, we will shoot for that again.

-We will need to get the gym reserved and secure about 15 tables.

-Recycle week in April: Going to put a reminder on the board for ink cartridges.  We are also going to do smencils, and markers as well.  What about recycled batteries??

-Walk-a-thon - Ms. Kent has brought up the idea of a Read-a-thon.  Would it be a conflict with our initial “one ask”??  We don’t want to confuse parents and the community about our “one ask.”  Should we consider a Buffalo Wild Wings night??  Emily will call them and set up a meeting with the BWWs person.  Mrs. Scheible will get us a reliable contact.  Does Pizza Hut do a Book It??  Amber will look into the Book It.  These will maybe be a better approach for this years reading month.

-We are also collecting Aunt Millie’s and Tysons labels.

Next Meeting March 4th at 6:30!

To instill in all Riverview students a healthy self-image, a love of learning and the desire to achieve their best in tomorrow's world.

  • Treasurer report - Kind of low
  • Old business - everything going over really well.
  • Tshirt sales - Close date on Sept. 26, going over well
  • Kindergarten field trip approved
  • Walk-a-thon - Supposed to be at 15% as of today and we are already at over 30% in online only.  A little trouble with registering for people without internet access.  Give tattoo for those even without registering.  Need to get info out to Pioneer.  Kim is the PR person for the school. She also has the camera.  Interested in putting some sort of ad into paper
  • Consider using the High School as a backup location.  May be looking at that option because of the issues with Top Taggert. Can buy and man the concession at the high school.
  • Jake’s Day - Oct. 9 next Thursday.  Health and Fitness Day - bouncy house
  • Match Day - Nov. 11 Theme is “Miracle in Mecosta” Goal is 1 Million in 7 hours.  Trying to beat last year which was at $700,000.  No match for kids this year.  GMA may be covering the event.  Coloring for kids etc.  Said yes to electric hookup.  T-shirts logo in back with Match day, no price point at this point, maybe about $10.  Patterson flowers contact.
  • Homecoming update - Theme is genres in Music.  Our theme will be Rock and Roll. Bales of Hay to be supplied by Julie.  Noah will be driver.  Usually meet at middle school around 5.  Parade Friday at 5:30. Need to check on time of parade.  Separate floats for the two elementary schools.  Candy throwers.  Homecoming committee meeting.  Spirit week - Brookside generally follows high school theme days.
  • Box Top/Scholastics - Going fine, deadline coming up this month.  Angie has some FSU students who may be available to help.  All the teachers have cans.  Scholastics - have been able to give the teachers.  Book fair the week of Halloween - need help for during the days.  Will be set up in the library.  Going to cancel library for the week.  Make up a flier for the math night/book fair flyer.  Takes place Oct. 29.  Theme is medieval times.  Some concern about kids wearing costumes, but will be allowed.  Need volunteers at night.  Will have 2 cash registers.  Volunteers will need to watch video.  Get 10% to be a helper.  Use tickets, need to have better organization to make the ticket use successful. Aunt Millie’s/Tysons/Coke Rewards/juice boxes to get started. Shannon to look into Tyson.
  • Labels for Education - about 93,000 points.  Maybe try to do something with those points for teacher appreciation week.  Do not believe the points expire.  Box to pin up to use as a reminder to turn in labels.  See if we can get another box. Let parents know of deadlines by sending out a flyer.
  • Shoparoo - Need to get it going.  Get a box put up.  Start using the Facebook page. Maybe wait to push info until after Walk-A-Thon
  • Meijer rewards - community rewards, may be connected to Mperks
  • Movie nights - got the licence  Hoping to get a newer release.  Looking for date before Christmas, perhaps Nov. 21. Perhaps Mr. Peabody and Sherman.
  • Combine school newsletter with PTO newsletter going out first week of the month
  • Biggby/Qdoba - shoot for Nov. 10.  Must distribute coupons to students.  15% profit for Qdoba, $1 per drink for Biggby
  • Smencils - smelly pencils, 10 different scents, variety themes.  About 55 cents per pencil $275 for Master case, makes $225 per case.  Sell for $1 a piece. Secretary sells them at designated times.  Perhaps selling at Book fair or certain days.  Alternate Fridays between suckers and smencils. Concern about fights over pencils in class.  Can kick it off with Book Fair, but will need a separate till.
  • Gaga Ball - will discuss next time.  Game for outside.  Look at getting lumber donated.
  • Playground drainage?  Ask Renee about additions to playground.
  • Headphones - perhaps PTO could purchase new headphone?  Computer lab purchases will need to go through the tech people first.
  • Would like to buy the school some laminating paper.
  • Crayola color cycle  - Jen

September 2014 Meeting Minutes

9/4/2014

  • Introductions & Sign In
  • Call to Order
  • Teacher report from Mrs. Orange-- Box Tops and Labels?  Same as last year? Competition between classes not preferable to classroom goals.
  • Principal report from Ms. Kent --Good first day.  Asking for advanced notification for changes in pick-up at end of day. Add to facebook and email list about getting notifications. Assembly tomorrow. Music performer Billy Craig.  Practice run for assembly today.  Trying to stress structures and order.  Enrollment at about 351.  Well staffed, though lots of staff changes.  Check with teachers about volunteering in classes.
  • Treasurer report--Emily and Amber will work together as the treasurer to keep things simple. PTO Money request form which is on the Google drive. Will put the Google drive info on facebook.
  • Successful Open House --Field trip request form.  Stopped using in 2012.  Emily revamped the form to have them available to teachers.
  • Amber in charge of Box Tops.  Keeping it goal oriented.  Will give monthly reports.  Made about $3500 last year.  Hoping to make $3700-4000 this year.  Angie proposing -Lego first league and PTO 50/50 split through Ferris. Box Tops cut checks twice a year. One in late fall and one in spring.  Labels for education gives points towards items in catalog rather than checks.  Box Tops questions go to Amber
  • Scholastic Book Fair - Oct. 20-24. We could push it back to the next week due to close proximity to the walk-a-thon.  That would push it into Halloween week.  Book fair pushed to the week of Halloween and incorporate it into a “themed” night.  Book fair in the library again this year.  Have teachers stop their classes library time during the book fair week.  Start book fair Oct 27 and down the 31.  Amber to close up on Saturday, Nov. 1.  Mrs. Orange suggests a letter to the teachers to prepare them for the library being closed that week.  Math night paired with the book fair, to take place Wed. Oct. 29.  Math night to begin at 5:30 and run till 7:30.  Ice cream novelties to be served. Book fair volunteers will need to have a training session before the book fair.
  • We have approximately $4100 in the scholastics account.  We have around $650 that will expire at the end of September.  There are lots of options of what to spend on, not just books.  Need a small cushion of money left in the account - approximately $1000-$1500.  Can we divide the money between the teachers and let them each determine how to use it? 13 classrooms.  Short supply of books for Kindergartners.  Use the $680 for K books and divide the rest between the classes.
  • Becky to take over the Labels for education.  Angie has access to students who need volunteer hours that can help glue labels.  Can ask parents to separate labels and box tops.
  • Leslie has coordinated the Tshirt sales.  Order forms will be sent home.
  • Movie Nights - Are we continuing this?  The license is $394. Did not have good turn out last year, but we are going to try again this year and make it bigger and better.  Sell the suckers and concessions for profit.  When do we want to host this?
  • Assemblies - Tuba Bach assembly
  • Qdoba and Biggby fundraisers - Brookside hosts these events once a month and do really well with it.  Buffalo Wild Wings also.  Jets Pizza will be eliminated due to low interest.
  • Homecoming - Sign up for the committee.  Oct. 17th is the parade.
  • Match Day -  Need volunteers to sit at tables.  Takes place in November.  Takes place during the day in the week.
  • Wreath Sales
  • Teacher Supplies - Have given $100 to teachers in the past.  We will continue that and include the specials.
  • Sucker sales - Amber volunteers to come in and sell the suckers during the week.
  • Walk-a-thon - Will take place Oct. 18.  Watch the video.  It is all rolled and should be pretty easy once we get set up.  We can make the event what we want.  We are pairing with Brookside with this to make it a Big Rapids elementary event.  Will have music, mascots etc.  Online minimum donation is $10.  Hoping for every student to get $40.  Trying to get just one major event for the year, so make it big.  Website and database set up now.  Will start taking pledges as soon as we are totally prepared.  Will send out around 150 corporate sponsor letters as well.
  • Next meeting will be Oct. 1.  Meetings will continue each month on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30.  Will need someone with a key to lock the building at the next meeting.
  • Will send out a monthly newsletter at the end of each month.  Collect and make a database of parents who are willing to help with PTO and functions.
