2/9/2016

  • Call Meeting to order.
  • Approval of January Minutes - Cooley
  • Treasure Report- very little went out last month- paid for standing desks and stools. Paid deposit for science assembly.
Teacher Report
  • Mrs. McKenna/Zocco-She is very impressed with our PTO at Riverview! Kids are excited for the valentine dance party.  Thank you for the bunsen burners.  Science fair (Feb 23rd) participation seems to be down this year as it is optional.  Consider sending a reminder to parents.  Girls Engineering is also happening on Feb 22nd-this is a program through ferris which attempts to get girls excited about engineering.  Teachers are looking for options for the boys. Calling all moms is Feb 22nd as well as the star lab. 2nd-4th grade will be attending the Middle Schools’ “The Lion King” Feb 18th at the High School.
  • Principal Report-N/A
Old Business:
  • Our purchases are in.
  • Standing Desks-Going well.
  • Hokie Stools
  • Scholastic dollars -books for rooms, rugs, and other supplies have arrived.
  • Cran Hill Field Trip-the weather and snow days have put a damper on this event.  on hold for now.
New Business:
  • What to spend the Walk-Money on?
  • Do we want to spend money on a charging cart?  Vote in favor of purchasing 1 charging cart.
  • We do have end of year field trips coming up, need to save about $5,000 for that.
  • Riverview is receiving $20,000 in technology early next school year, so it is advised to wait on spending any money on technology this year.
  • We will be purchasing about $3,000 is playground equipment for the upper elementary area.
  • Consider a canopy for shade on the playground-might have to save for a couple years.
  • New teacher signs for the sidewalk are in the works.
Roller rink rental:
  • Amber and Jamie will be representing PTO. We will raffle off roller rink passes that were left over from the walk a thon.
  • Extra party - Feb 12th from 12:30-2:30.  PTO has 3 busses, they will take a group to the roller rink and then come back for more.
  • Any cute ideas? Play games like they do on skates.
  • Should we do cake? Cookies have been ordered and PTO will take care of water.
  • Need to clarify a few things with teachers and parents:
  • No outside food will be accepted
  • No siblings
  • We do not recommend taking children home from the skating rink.
Science Fair:
  • Feb 23rd 5:30-7:00, do we reserve tables?  Science committee has taken care of that.  Might want more for 4th grade “State Project”
  • Committed to the money to help.  Angie Mishler is coordinating and PTO will reimburse.
Assemblies:
  • Put the down payment on assembly $50
  • Science or Magic-Keith Fields will be entertaining the school on Feb 29th from 1:30-2:15.  Total is $550
  • Reading Month-Do we want an author or a Reading Assembly?  or both?  Maybe authors can go into individual classroom and we can do an assembly for the entire school.
  • Star Lab will be at the school on Feb 22nd for classrooms to visit.
Box tops:
  • Jennifer Deater-All updated and ready to go.  Next box top submission date is March 1-please get in all box tops by then.  We will continue to collect all year.
Labels:
  • Becky-New news from LFE-This program will be dissolving.  Campbell's is pulling out of the program but it sounds like we can submit anything with a LFE logo until Aug 17.  We currently have about 25,000 points.
Next Book Fair:
  • March 14-March 18th-sign up to help at next month's meeting or let us know your availability.  Cooley can work Friday.  Parks can work Monday.
  • Teachers will submit wish list.
  • Groovy 70’s theme
  • Wed March 16 Family Dinner
  • Keep Nachos -Heather and Megan are taking care of this.
Girls on the run-a program for 3rd and 4th graders.
  • Will we provide the $15 shoes for the girls who can’t afford them?
  • City offers scholarship programs for the entry fee, but not the shoes.  PTO likes this idea, but will we be asked to help for soccer, basketball, etc? Let's get an idea of how many kids from Renee before approving at the next meeting.
Teacher Appreciation
  • We have idea, kept off the minutes for spying eyes.
Mr. Shewan:
  • Set assembly date (I was thinking… just do one at the end-March 27th)
  • Get notice out to the classes about their “special” tasks.  Do the teachers want to “adopt” a month/week and do something special. Then jokes if they would like for the end assembly?
Movie night:
  • We would like to fit one more in at least.  Ask Renee for dates in March (Feb has a lot going on).
Fill a tub:
  • Teachers expressed concern about the lack of gym shoes/outdoor clothing.  We thought of doing a “Fill the tub” at the Book Fair family night.  If your family brings in an item (boots, shoes, gloves, snowpants), you get a raffle ticket for a $25 scholastic gift card.  Teachers could keep the tubs in their room.
Working on developing a budget
Still in the process

Our Mission is to instill in all Riverview students a healthy self-image, a love of learning and the desire to achieve their best in tomorrow’s world.

December 2015 Meeting Minutes

12/3/2015

  • Call meeting to order
  • Approval of November minutes - Deater
Treasurer Report
Emily - Moby max refund came through, you also see the BWW lunch, and Walk-A-Thon check came through. Drama donation due to Suessical error from last year.

Teacher report
Miss Cole - A few parents and teachers have asked about the tippy stool, would we be able to get more?  We will resend the link to the teachers so they can access the Google drive and get a request form. The date has been sent for science fair.  There is some need for more chromebooks, or to replace the netbooks with the chromebooks.

Principal report

Old Business
  • Walk-A-Thon - finalized with Brookside, the check came in.
  • Movie night - everything went well
  • Roller Rink Party - It went really well, it went really smoothly.
  • Themometer - Tanya has taken care of it. She will bring it in!
  • Match Day - Thank you to everyone who sat at the table!

New Business
What to spend Walk-A-Thon money on?

Upper el classes need some upgrades on the playground.  What can we put in on the playground for them? Megan will look into some options other than climbers.  We need to get a move on. If we look to replace the netbooks with some chromebooks, how many would we need?  Most classroom has 4 or five netbooks. Maybe if we can replace some every year? Let’s look at replacing 2 for every classroom and then filling out the ipad cart so there is an even 30 for the cart.

Second roller rink party - This will happen in February.  Amber Davis coordinated this.

Holiday shop - December 14 &15, Monday and Tuesday.  Our order should arrive tomorrow.  We ordered through the dollar store.  Everything will be $1.  We will need to request tables.  Set up will take place Sunday evening.  Can we give out an envelope for the students who don’t have money, so they are not pulled out seperately to shop?  Or maybe if the teachers could make a list of those who may need assistance to shop? We did feed the high schoolers last year, and we can do that again. Check for meal restrictions with the high schoolers.

Teacher Christmas gifts - Amber has an idea!

Box Tops & Labels - Tanya - Octobers batch went in.  We just sent in another batch. We are doing away with sending home the worksheets every week.  Box top challenge is still in the works.

Budget -
Standing desks - Deater and Mrs. Zocco have interest in purchasing standing desks.  Some of the standing desks have stool options, and a fidget bar for their feet.  Some have shelves or pockets.  They usually run from $200-300 a piece.  Could we try these out to see if these will work for some of our more active students?  If we do two or three of these, we can reevaluate later to see if they work well.  We could also get more of the hokki stools too.

Science Fair -  February 23 will be the day! Ferris students do a small presentation, can we give the $20 per group to pay for their expenses?
Assembly - let’s get a science assembly going in February

Mr. Shewan - We need to get a move on some ideas for him.  Let’s do a surprise assembly as well. Let’s do this starting in January, we talked about giving each grade a month to do something special.  Give him a joke book, letting the kids write the jokes.

January 6 will be the next meeting!!

January 2015 Meeting Minutes

1/8/2015

Approval of December minutes
Teacher Report - Mrs. Defever
-Thanks to PTO and parents for everything you do!  Teachers request for Super Teacher Worksheet.  Last one done by Cathy Klarecki.  Cheaper if both schools (with Brookside) do it.  Maybe join together? Emily will contact Katie Thomas to see if they are interested.  We did do it singly last year. $100 cheaper per school to do it together. Can use it now, will expire in May.

-Field trips for teachers - trying to encourage every teacher to take a field trip.  Field trips have not taken as many recently because of low funds. Teachers are on board with getting it to happen.

Principal report - Ms. Kent
-Had a great end of year (2014).  Everyone was very calm and tired yesterday!  Reflex was not happening during Christmas break.  Remember that it is a good tool when school is not in session.

-Cart and ipad airs come Monday.  Looking to put apps onto the ipads to use.  Title 1 school - when we buy reflex ($3000-4000), we need to show how we are using it and taking advantage of it.

-No other major happenings this month.  Valentine party next month.  New kitchen staff.  Getting more chromebooks as well.  Total of 36 ipads - 26 on the cart. Ms. Quinlan just got a projector and smartboard as well.  We are very fortunate to have these technologies!!

Old Business
-Holiday Shop - It was a little chaotic!!  The company we went through has been a little difficult, we have not paid in yet.  Though, we still be ahead though.  Do we want to go through this company again?  Maybe, just buy our own stuff from the Dollar Store, etc? The company we went through last year was of a better quality.  Could we involve community members in terms of homemade scarves, pot holders, etc?   Should we make everything $1 next year? Or a table for $1 and $5 items.  Brookside does it that way, we should check with them to see what they do.

New Business
-Soccer Nets? - we will revisit again later

-Problem with BWW meals for walk-a-thon.  We will probably need to just purchase the meals and hand them out.  We have 46 that we need to hand out.  Let’s just buy them for this year and will figure out a better plan for next year.

-Gaga pit - can we look at donations to get that going?  What is going on with the playground?  Draining issue with the playground - it will be in our best interest to wait.

-Valentines day
-Something for Dads - a big sign like “You the Man”
-Calling all moms - a little celebration of moms that happens at Valentines Day.
-Calling all dads maybe in April?  Doughnuts for Dads?

-Book Fair - week of March 16th.  Book fair theme is Under the Sea.  But the schools reading month theme will be different.

-Box Tops, etc - Just received check for $1800+ dollars!!!  We collect them year round, so keep sending them in!!!  Maybe release the amount we made at the end of the year.

-Next Movie Night - Feb. 13th??  Optometry students that need hours, could we do a Parents Night Out and leave the kids with the optometry students in the gym? Only school age kids then?  Big Hero Six out Feb. 23.  Could we reserve the gym and have a fun night there? Donations optional? Charity event?  Angels of Action?

Let’s do February 27th movie night with Big Hero Six and charity donations for Angels of Action.  Pre-register so we can see how many we will have?  98 people at the first movie night and we fit comfortably in our gym.  Keep it here at Riverview.

-Teacher Appreciation Week - first week of May.  The teachers would really like to see new chairs for the lounge.  Can we redo the lounge?? We also have a bunch of labels points that we can use for gifts as well.  Lounge wish list??

Next Meeting Feb. 4th!!

  • Walk-a-thon - Supposed to be at 15% as of today and we are already at over 30% in online only.  A little trouble with registering for people without internet access.  Give tattoo for those even without registering.  Need to get info out to Pioneer.  Kim is the PR person for the school. She also has the camera.  Interested in putting some sort of ad into paper

  • Jake’s Day - Oct. 9 next Thursday.  Health and Fitness Day - bouncy house
  • Match Day - Nov. 11 Theme is “Miracle in Mecosta” Goal is 1 Million in 7 hours.  Trying to beat last year which was at $700,000.  No match for kids this year.  GMA may be covering the event.  Coloring for kids etc.  Said yes to electric hookup.  T-shirts logo in back with Match day, no price point at this point, maybe about $10.  Patterson flowers contact.
  • Homecoming update - Theme is genres in Music.  Our theme will be Rock and Roll. Aunt Millie’s/Tysons/Coke Rewards/juice boxes to get started. Shannon to look into Tyson.
  • Labels for Education - about 93,000 points.  Maybe try to do something with those points for teacher appreciation week.  Do not believe the points expire.  Box to pin up to use as a reminder to turn in labels.  See if we can get another box. Let parents know of deadlines by sending out a flyer.
  • Shoparoo - Need to get it going.  Get a box put up.  Start using the Facebook page. Maybe wait to push info until after Walk-A-Thon
  • Meijer rewards - community rewards, may be connected to Mperks
  • Movie nights - got the licence  Hoping to get a newer release.  Looking for date before Christmas, perhaps Nov. 21. Perhaps Mr. Peabody and Sherman.
  • Combine school newsletter with PTO newsletter going out first week of the month
  • Biggby/Qdoba - shoot for Nov. 10.  Must distribute coupons to students.  15% profit for Qdoba, $1 per drink for Biggby
  • Smencils - smelly pencils, 10 different scents, variety themes.  About 55 cents per pencil $275 for Master case, makes $225 per case.  Sell for $1 a piece. Secretary sells them at designated times.  Perhaps selling at Book fair or certain days.  Alternate Fridays between suckers and smencils. Concern about fights over pencils in class.  Can kick it off with Book Fair, but will need a separate till.
  • Gaga Ball - will discuss next time.  Game for outside.  Look at getting lumber donated.
  • Playground drainage?  Ask Renee about additions to playground.
  • Headphones - perhaps PTO could purchase new headphone?  Computer lab purchases will need to go through the tech people first.
